Hazardous Cargo Inspector / Certifier

About the role

We are looking for a Hazardous Cargo Inspector / Certifier to lead the safe handling, certification and oversight of hazardous materials and waste for a US Navy program on Diego Garcia.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and oversee hazardous waste management operations, including hazardous material (HM), hazardous waste (HW), medical waste and other regulated waste (ORW) in line with Diego Garcia Final Governing Standards.
• Conduct initial and annual refresher training for material handlers, waste disposal technicians, shippers and transporters.
• Manage collection, packaging, transportation and disposal of hazardous materials, ensuring compliance with federal and military regulations.
• Operate and maintain the Hazardous Waste Storage Area (HWSA), Satellite Hazardous Waste Accumulation Points (SHWAPs) and Hazardous Material Minimization (HAZMIN) Re‑issue Center.
• Certify outgoing hazardous cargo shipments and prepare accurate documentation, labeling and packaging.
• Perform inspections, audits and quality‑control checks of HM/HW operations and investigate incidents to implement corrective actions.
• Maintain current knowledge through authorized training at Naval School of Physical Distribution Management and School of Military Packaging Technology.

Required profile

• Minimum five years documented experience in hazardous material, hazardous waste, medical waste or regulated waste management.
• At least five years operating hazardous material or waste facilities such as HWSA and HAZMIN Re‑issue Centers.
• Certification to inspect and certify hazardous cargo shipments obtained through initial and biennial refresher training.
• Completed authorized training at Naval School of Physical Distribution Management (Oakland, CA) and School of Military Packaging Technology (Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD).
