Tug Chief Officer

About the role

The Tug Chief Officer will serve as the second‑in‑command on a US Navy tug operating from Diego Garcia, supporting the Master in all aspects of vessel operation, navigation and crew management. This role ensures safe, efficient and compliant tug operations in a critical defence environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Master with navigation, vessel handling, towing, docking and undocking operations.
• Supervise and participate in deck activities, ensuring safety, readiness and compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.
• Oversee cargo handling, load and ballast distribution, fuel transfers and port entry procedures.
• Maintain and test safety and firefighting equipment, and conduct regular emergency drills.
• Manage deck logs, voyage data, reports and documentation to meet legal and contractual requirements.
• Coordinate routine maintenance of mooring winches, hawsers and towing gear.
• Work closely with the Chief Engineer to monitor mechanical status and vessel readiness.
• Act as primary safety officer for deck operations, identifying risks and ensuring environmental compliance.
• Maintain inventories of navigation and operational equipment and arrange resupply.
• Assume command as acting Captain when the Master is unavailable.

Required profile

• Valid Chief Mate (unlimited) certification or equivalent STCW licence.
• 3–5 years of experience on tugs or similar vessels performing towage, docking and port services.
• Strong knowledge of maritime regulations, ISM Code and safety procedures.
• Ability to lead deck crew and coordinate with port authorities and stakeholders.
