ABS Certified Welder for Military Ship Maintenance

About the role

The position provides shipboard welding services for the repair and maintenance of piping, machinery, and structural systems on Military Sealift Command vessels and prepositioned ships operating from Diego Garcia.

Key responsibilities

• Join metal parts using electric arc, oxy‑acetylene, MIG or TIG welding methods according to blueprints and welding specifications.
• Perform cutting, burning, pre‑heating, and annealing of metals with flame torches.
• Identify metal characteristics and select appropriate electrodes, filler materials, and welding processes.
• Fabricate, fit, and lay‑out pipes or metal plates using mechanical drawings as guides.
• Maintain safe operation of equipment, adhere to job safety requirements, and keep work areas clean.

Required profile

• ABS 6G‑P1 certification with visual and non‑destructive testing (RT) qualification.
• Minimum five years experience as a Journeyman or Marine Welder in naval ship repair, commercial shipyards, or oil refineries.
• High‑school diploma plus vocational or apprenticeship training in welding technology.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and sketches.
• Proficiency in English (oral and written) and ability to pass overseas medical screening.

Required skills

• ABS 6G‑P1 high‑pressure vessel/pipe welding.
• MIG, TIG, and SMAW welding techniques.
• Metal cutting and beveling using manual and semi‑automatic equipment.
• Metallurgy knowledge for high‑tensile steel, Cu‑Ni alloys, and aluminum.
• Blueprint and mechanical drawing interpretation.
