METOC Observer - Diego Garcia

About the role

Amentum is recruiting a METOC Observer to support a unique U.S. Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. The role provides 24/7 meteorological and oceanographic observation support, ensuring continuous operations at the assigned location.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and maintain weather monitoring and observation equipment in line with established protocols.
• Collect, document and analyze meteorological and oceanographic data, including synoptic and special observations.
• Administer observation programs so that all data meets predefined accuracy and quality standards.
• Produce accurate, timely weather reports and share important updates with stakeholders.
• Enter and process data using weather-related computer systems.
• Troubleshoot minor equipment issues or escalate technical problems.
• Ensure all observations and reports comply with U.S. Navy standards and implementation instructions.

Required profile

• 1-3 years of experience in meteorology, oceanography or related fields.
• High school diploma or equivalent; computer proficiency and understanding of basic computer functions.
• Demonstrated ability to operate weather observation equipment and run synoptic and special observation programs.
• Visual acuity corrected to 20/20 and English written and spoken.
• Valid passport valid at least one year at hiring, able to obtain country-specific visas and pass contract medical requirements.
• Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials; physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally.

Preferred qualifications

• Prior experience in an austere OCONUS environment with a multi-national workforce.
• Valid country driver's license.
• Background supporting U.S. Navy or Department of Defense operations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to work under pressure.

The position is remote, overseas, and may involve evenings, weekends, holidays and extended hours, with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, dust and uneven terrain.
