Shipwright – Marine Vessel Construction

About the role

Amentum is seeking a skilled Shipwright to support a unique U.S. Navy program on Diego Garcia. The role involves constructing, repairing, and maintaining marine vessels and related components in a demanding dry‑dock environment.

Key responsibilities

• Construct, repair, and maintain vessels according to blueprints, ship plans, and technical specifications.
• Lay out reference points, centerlines, and alignment locations using transits, levels, plumb bobs, and measuring tapes.
• Build and install keel blocks, bilge blocks, cradles, shoring, and support structures for construction and dry‑dock operations.
• Fabricate, fit, and install wooden structural components such as furring pieces, aprons, uprights, framing, and blocking.
• Secure metal fittings, plates, bulkheads, and structural hardware to wooden components using bolts, fasteners, braces, and hand/power tools.
• Operate woodworking machinery, portable power tools, lifting equipment, and material‑handling equipment safely.
• Inspect completed work for alignment, fit, and compliance with project requirements.
• Support vessel launches, recoveries, and maintenance projects, and perform preventive maintenance on tools.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work orders.
• Commitment to safety, use of PPE, and adherence to occupational and environmental regulations.
• Physical ability to perform manual labor in a shipyard environment.

Required skills

• Woodworking machinery operation.
• Use of portable power tools and hand tools.
• Measurement and layout using transits, levels, plumb bobs, and tapes.
• Lifting and material‑handling equipment operation.
