About the role
The Deckhand / Line Handler will support a US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia, assisting with vessel operations, passenger service, and cargo handling. This position involves working aboard ships and barges in a variety of weather conditions.
Key responsibilities
- Stand lookout watch in traffic areas under all weather and sea conditions.
- Inspect and maintain emergency equipment daily.
- Assist passengers, perform cleanup, and provide customer service.
- Operate safety gates, loading ramps, and secure deck areas.
- Read gauges and fluid levels in the engine room and report issues to the captain.
- Handle lines, tie up barges, and perform towing operations.
- Conduct onboard maintenance, repairs, and regular inspections of machinery and equipment.
- Maintain the vessel’s Preventive Maintenance System and ensure compliance with safety standards.
Required profile
- High school education or equivalent preferred.
- Physically fit to lift up to 75 lb, pull heavy lines, and work on ladders and uneven surfaces.
- Ability to work in warm, wet, and hazardous conditions for long hours.
- Willingness to live and work in a remote, potentially uncomfortable environment.
Required skills
- Good communication and customer service abilities.
- Working knowledge of marine equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
